My Friend Wants to Know: What About the Holy Spirit?

What about the Holy Spirit?

As Christians, we believe in the Holy Trinity; God the Father, Jesus the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. God expresses himself in three different persons, all equally God on their own, but serving different functions or roles. So what is the Holy Spirit?

Sometimes when people talk about the Holy Spirit they refer to it as the “Holy Ghost.” When they say “Holy Ghost” they aren’t referring to a literal ghost. In Hebrew, the Bible’s word for spirit or “ghost” is ruwach – meaning a wind, breath, violent exhalation, or blast of breath. How awesome is that? The Holy Spirit is the breath of God! In Genesis, the Bible says God formed us out of dust and when He spoke we came to life.

When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, the Bible says the Holy Spirit comes to live in us. God’s essence and breath live in us through the Holy Spirit.

Taking a breath is so near and natural to us, just as God’s presence is near to us. If you take a breath in and a breath out He is that close to you. Our God is so great! Just as our life depends on breath, we depend on the breath of God and the Holy Spirit’s work in our lives.

“I’ve never seen the wind, but I’ve seen the effects of the wind” – Billy Graham

The Holy Spirit is unpredictable. His operation is not under our control but under the control of God in the confines of His character, nature and will. Even though the Holy Spirit is unpredictable in what He does, what we benefit from Him is life-changing.

The Holy Spirit provides power.
We need the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives. When we are struggling, hurting and have issues the power of God is available to us. When life gets tough and nothing makes sense, we know that we have the power of God to endure.

The Holy Spirit is refreshing.
God’s spirit and power that lives in us is refreshing. When we are hopeless, He gives hope. When we think we aren’t enough, He makes us enough. His presence is near and refreshes the hope in our soul. In God’s breath we live and move.

The Holy Spirit moves in us.
The Holy Spirit can move in and touch a part of you no one else can. He can touch you in a way no guy/girl, circumstance, or job ever could. He is the most intimate part of our life.

The Holy Spirit reveals God to us.
The Holy Spirit’s job is to reveal Jesus and to give us a greater revelation of God. He takes up the plans and purposes of God and changes our posture and position so we can understand God’s mission. With that revelation, we can serve others and advance His kingdom.

When we actively pursue the gifts of the Holy Spirit, He gives us power to live our lives in the fruit of the spirit. We can live our life in love, kindness, patience, hope and truth (1 Corinthians 13:4-7).

How do I pursue the Holy Spirit?

Don’t grieve God. Don’t break his heart. His Holy Spirit, moving and breathing in you, is the most intimate part of your life, making you fit for himself. Don’t take such a gift for granted.
Ephesians 4:30 (MSG)

#1.) Submit your fears and misperceptions to God

“Trust GOD from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own.” – Proverbs 3:5 (MSG)

We can’t comprehend all of God. “The River of the Spirit runs through the banks of Scripture.” Read and know your bible.

#2.) Pursue all God has for you

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” – Jeremiah 29:13

When you bow your knee to Jesus Christ, God comes in and all of Him is available to you. We like to ask, “Do I have access to all of God?” However, a better question to ask ourselves is “Does God have access to all of me?”

Through the Holy Spirit we have full access to God and His plans for our lives. Come to God with a heart seeking Him and His plans for your life. A heart saying, “Anything you want for my life God, I want it too.”

Be desperate for God with a spiritual thirst. When we are desperate for the Holy Spirit’s presence in our lives, the things we tried to get satisfaction from will pale in comparison to the satisfaction from Him.

#3.) Develop an intimate friendship with the Holy Spirit

“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever.” – John 14:16

The Holy Spirit comes and lives with you. He lifts the end of everything that is too heavy for you. He is right here, ready to help you. He wants to help carry you through all of the struggles and pain.

The world is hurting, people are hurting, broken, hopeless and looking for answers. The Holy Spirit, God’s spirit with us, is the answer. The answer to most of our problems is a greater yielding to the Holy Spirit.

#4.) Make the Holy Spirit your “Go To Move”

There are weaknesses in our lives and things that don’t make sense. Leaning on the Holy Spirit as our “go to move” will help us whenever we are being attacked from an enemy, trying to do something we don’t think we can do, having trouble knowing what to do or say, or being in need of power. Make the Holy Spirit your “go-to move” and He will reveal God’s plans to you.
